Near the end of the first quarter of Saturday’s game at Folsom Field in Boulder, with the Buffaloes ahead of Utah 14-3, the junior recorded his third interception of the season.
Colton Hood, another cornerback, deflected a pass from Utah quarterback Isaac Wilson into the air after Hunter intercepted it.
After the interception—his third of the season and his eighth of his college career—Hunter struck the Heisman pose.
The celebration, which was first hit by Michigan’s Desmond Howard on Nov. 23, 1991, is a very popular celebration, but Hunter, who started the day as the Heisman Trophy favorite, was penalized for it.
Hunter, coach Deion Sanders, and quarterback Shedeur Sanders have the No. 20 Buffaloes (7-2, 5-1 Big 12) in the running for both the Big 12 Conference title and the 12-team College Football Playoffs.
Hunter had 21 total tackles going into Saturday’s game, including two interceptions, seven pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He also had 69 receptions for 856 yards and nine touchdowns.
He had more than 250 more snaps than Texas Tech offensive tackle Caleb Rogers (793) with 1,044 total (519 offensive, 525 defensive, and 21 special teams).
