Reports reaching Sportview Media has it that the New York Giants are expected to select Tommy DeVito as their new starting quarterback after benching the struggling Daniel Jones.
Jones’ benching marks the beginning of the Giants’ transition away from the quarterback they signed less than two years ago to a four-year, $160 million contract.
Starting Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium, DeVito will take Jones’ place. Jones’ backup in every game this season has been veteran Drew Lock, who is also with the Giants (2–8), who are coming off a bye week.
With seven games left in the New York season, the quarterback position has changed. Although Jones’ performance and the Giants’ record played a major role in the decision, general manager Joe Schoen and ownership also had to take into account the $23 million injury guarantee in Jones’ 2025 contract, which becomes fully guaranteed if he is hurt and cannot pass a physical during the offseason.
To guard against a significant injury guarantee, the Giants are not the first team to sit a quarterback. The Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders both made similar moves with Russell Wilson ($37 million) and Jimmy Garoppolo ($11.25 million) just last season. In sharp contrast to the previous weeks, when he committed to Jones right away following losses, coach Brian Daboll stated following the Giants’ Week 10 loss to the Carolina Panthers that the team would “evaluate” everything during their bye week. The process of changing the quarterback was then underway.
However, there were indications in earlier weeks that the Giants would eventually take this course. In addition to publicly searching for a quarterback at the top of this year’s draft, they benched Jones four weeks ago in a 28-3 Week 7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
After Jones and Tyrod Taylor were injured last season, DeVito was a surprise starter and won three straight games. Behind Lock, he started every game this season as the third-string quarterback.
The Giants have gone 3-13 in Jones’ 16 starts over the last two seasons since he signed his contract in March 2023 and won a playoff game following the 2022 season. During New York’s 20-17 overtime loss in Germany, he had 10 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions, including two expensive picks deep in Carolina territory.
In his last five games, 27-year-old Jones has thrown two touchdown passes and four interceptions. During a flea-flicker against the Panthers, he also missed open wide receivers, which caused Daboll to appear agitated. He screamed and flailed his arms in disgust as he went down the sideline.
With 15.6 points per game, the Giants rank 32nd in the NFL in terms of scoring and are expected to select a quarterback with one of the top picks in the upcoming draft.
It is as much a criticism of Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen to move on from Jones as it is of the quarterback. They used the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley, who is currently doing well with the rival Philadelphia Eagles, and signed Jones to the eye-opening contract after he had just finished his best season in 2022.
During his career in 2022, Jones finished sixth in QBR with 15 touchdown passes and only six interceptions. In a playoff victory over the Minnesota Vikings, he was nearly faultless as well.
However, injuries and an inoperable offensive line from the previous season have made it difficult for the Giants to get Jones back to playing at that level. Jones missed 2023 games due to a torn ACL and neck injury.
