João Félix rejoins Chelsea from Atlético Madrid

Chelsea confirmed on Wednesday that it had acquired João Félix from Atlético Madrid on a permanent basis. The forward signed a contract that will last seven years.

ESPN has learned from sources that the teams reached an agreement for add-ons worth about €50 million ($55.4 million). Twenty percent of any future transfer fee that the player earns while leaving Chelsea will stay with Atlético.

Félix, who scored four goals in 20 appearances on his six-month loan at Stamford Bridge last season, is making his way back to west London.

I’m really happy to be back at Chelsea and I can’t wait to get started,” Félix said.

It’s always wonderful to see some faces I recognize from my last visit.

I loved my time here before and I told my friends and family that I’d love to return to the Premier League one day. To do that with Chelsea is a great feeling and I’m excited to be back.

Félix played for Barcelona past season while on loan from Atlético, making 44 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

After playing for Portugal at Euro 2024, he returned to Atlético, although he had intended to stay at Barça past this summer.

After Pedro Neto, Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Filip Jörgensen, Omari Kellyman, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Renato Veiga, and Marc Guiu, the 24-year-old is Chelsea’s eleventh summer addition. Estêvão Willian has committed to join the team in 2025.

Félix joined Atlético in the summer of 2019 for a club-record €126 million. He started his career with Benfica. He failed to meet expectations and found it difficult to adjust to the strategies of head coach Diego Simeone. For Atlético, he scored 34 goals in 131 appearances.
